The Arizona Life Coalition’s generous financial grant to the Pregnancy Resource Clinic of AZ (PRCaz) was instrumental in saving lives in 2014. It was used primarily in our marketing efforts to reach women who are abortion-determined to invite and encourage them to come to our clinic for free pregnancy tests, free ultra-sounds and counseling.
Instead of viewing abortion as their first or only option, the goal is for these women, after going through the "Personal Decision Making" counseling, to feel valued and heard and to walk out choosing to carry their baby to term. Maria was one of those young women. A date rape drug was slipped into her drink during a weekend of parties in Mexico and left Maria scared, angry and crazed with worry and shame. When she found out she was pregnant, her worst fears had come true. She was devastated. As a single mom of three and a caregiver to her ailing mother, she didn't think she could face what her family would think of her. It was more than she could bear. The only choice she thought she had was abortion. God guided Maria's footsteps to the PRCaz, where she spent 3 hours with loving and caring staff and volunteers. An ultrasound was performed. Her heart sunk. The baby measured almost 21 weeks which meant she was left with only 2 weeks to legally have the abortion procedure. She now faced the pressure of time. As she left the clinic, she was uncertain of her choice. A few weeks passed... The office computers in the PRCaz offices were already "sleeping" and the lights had been switched off, when, unexpectedly, the door opened and in walked Maria. She said she wanted to talk, so we invited her into the office and began to listen. Turns out...a lot had happened! When Maria finally shared the truth with her mom and stepdad, she was surprised by their response. They shared with her their own story which involved infertility. And instead of the judgement she had expected, her parents shared their desire to adopt the baby. When she told her supervisor at work about the pregnancy, she not only was placed in a job requiring less physical stress, she was also given a much needed raise.
When she explained to her children the outcome of that horrific night, they were understanding and supportive. Maria had walked a rough road to the realization that her baby was not a mistake but an innocent bystander; that heeding the promptings of her heart had resulted in multiple blessings for her and her family; that God's love and grace were limitless. With tear-filled eyes, she thanked the PRC staff as she recounted the fact that had she not come for help, her baby would not be alive today. She thanked the clinic for helping her find clarity...for helping her find her way back to God...for helping her desperation become hope. Her child is wanted and already loved. Her child will have a bright future and now, so will she. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
